Pottery Materials Planner

undefined

Pottery materials planner by Envelo SlipScale: the size to make each piece with your clay’s shrinkage, the clay and bags to buy, a glaze batch weighed out from its recipe, what you are short of – and a true-size shrinkage ruler to print.

How big do I throw a mug that should be 9 cm after the kiln? How much clay for the whole set, and how many grams of each material for a 1 kg glaze batch? SlipScale answers from your own clay and your own recipe.

What it does

What you can do

  • Type your clay body, its shrinkage (from the bag or a test bar), the bag size and the bags you have
  • Add your pieces: the size you want after the firing, the clay for one and how many – SlipScale gives the size to make and the clay for each row
  • See the clay you need with your extra for trimming and reclaim, the bags to buy and the clay left over
  • Copy a glaze recipe in percent: the grams of each material for any batch size, additions on top of the 100 % base, the dry total and the water
  • See the clay and glaze materials you are short of in one list, and save it as a CSV table
  • Print a shrinkage ruler at true size: 180 × 120 mm, true centimetres on one edge and fired centimetres on the other, with your pieces and glaze card – download as SVG or print at 100 % on A4 or US Letter
  • Grams, kilograms and centimetres or ounces, pounds and inches; backup and restore

Example inside

A made-up table set from a buff stoneware with 12 % shrinkage: six mugs, four bowls, two plates and a vase – a 24 cm plate is made at 27.3 cm. 9.4 kg of clay, 10.81 kg with 15 % extra: two 10 kg bags, one to buy. A made-up satin glaze: a 1000 g batch weighs out to 1100 g dry with the additions and 990 g of water; three materials to buy.

Good to know

  • This is a digital download. Nothing is shipped.
  • No subscription and no account. The app runs on your device and uploads nothing.
  • No glaze recipes are included – the example recipe is made up and not tested. SlipScale works with the recipes you have.
  • SlipScale does not check whether a glaze is food safe. Test every glaze on a tile, and measure the shrinkage of your own clay with a test bar.
  • Your numbers do not sync between devices; move them with the backup file.
  • For your own use. Please don't resell or share the files.
  • The app, its logo, the texts and the translations were made as code with the help of an AI coding assistant. No AI image generators were used.
